2021 IEEE Nikola Tesla Award winners

It is reported that the IEEE Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is the world's largest professional and technical organization, with more than 400,000 members in more than 160 countries around the world, and more than 1,300 professional and technical conferences held around the world every year. In the fields of electrical and electronic engineering, computers, communications, etc., IEEE publishes 30% of the world's similar literature. In 1975, in honor of Nikola Tesla, the founder of electromagnetism, IEEE established the IEEE Nikola Tesla Award to recognize experts and scholars who have made outstanding contributions in the field of power generation and consumption.  The award is given annually globally to individuals or teams of up to three people, and the winners for the following year are announced.

About the IEEE Nikola Tesla Award

As the highest honor in the electrical field, the IEEE Nikola Tesla Award has rigorous review criteria, which are born by IEEE based on the criteria of technical influence, innovation value, breadth of use, leadership, and nomination quality. Professor Zhu stood out from the global candidates, which shows his academic strength and international influence. In fact, this is the second IEEE honor that Professor Zhu has received, and he was awarded the IEEE Outstanding Achievement Award for Industrial Applications in 2019.

Professor Zhu Ziqiang

As the winner of the 46th IEEE Nikola Tesla Award, Professor Zhu has been committed to the design, control and application of permanent magnet motors in the spirit of "seeking truth and innovation". He has outstanding research achievements in the fields of electrical machinery, power electronics and control, has more than 50 authorized invention patents, and published nearly 1,200 academic papers, including 444 IEEE and IET Journal papers, which have been widely cited by international peers and textbooks. In addition, he has trained hundreds of PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, eight of whom have obtained full professorships at top universities in the UK and China.

At present, Professor Zhu leads the world's largest and internationally leading R&D team of electric motors and drives at the University of Sheffield in the field of permanent magnet motor systems, and has established and supervised a number of scientific research centers, the most representative of which are: GMCC&Welling Shanghai Motor R&D Center, Midea Academia Sinica Motor and Drive Control Research Center, Sheffield Midea Joint Laboratory, Sheffield China CRRC Electric Drive Technology Research Center, Sheffield Siemens Wind Power R&D Center. It is worth mentioning that Professor Zhu also serves as the Chief Scientist of the UK's largest government-funded offshore wind prosperity partnership.
